Homework Assignment 1

Following are two websites that I feel are succesful and two that I feel are unsuccessful.

Target's website is successful, in my opinion, because they make the type big and bold to show you what is important and what they are trying to sell you. Also, by enlarging the size of a picture, like the television for example, they grab your attention right away hoping that you will buy the product.  They make their site neat and clean-looking by putting negative space in between the words. This also helps not to distract from what they are trying to sell you. http://www.target.com

Old Navy's website is successful, in my opinion because they use a bright color, orange, to attract you to the sale price. Items listed horizontally at the top and items listed on the left side of the page make it organized and neat, not messy or chaotic. There are six specialized categories in the left-hand column. There are several interactive elements. In addition, it has unity and continuity to it. The repetition of sweat shirts and the different colors bring you into the website. OldNavy.com

The Kmart website is not successful, in my opinion, because there are too many images, which make it look too chaotic and distracting.  There is too much hot red on the page.  All the white letters on a red background make it difficult to read.  The background does not make the words show up very well. www.kmart.com

Rite Aid's website is not successful, in my opinion, because the picture on the top of the page keeps changing. This is annoying.  Everything is very close together with not very much negative space, which makes it look cluttered and junky. www.riteaid.com

  1. I think target is pretty successful too because they use "helvetica" which is a good universal modern type. Good choice!

  2. Target is definitely doing something right - I have always loved their TV commercials - their on-line sales for Missoni (?) line was CRAZY!
